Every week after a Spartanburg Viking Football game, I’m going to put my thoughts here on the 3 Biggest things I took away from our game last Friday Night. With that said, here are my thoughts on our Round 1 45-3 win over JL Mann.
1- It was great to see some guys back on the field Friday night. Injuries have really hurt us the 2nd half of the season and it was awesome to see Jayden Brown play a lot, Jaylin Mathis played a ton, Jordan Thomas looked really good and of course Trenton Lynch was spectacular as usual. 6 carries for 124 yards and 2 TDs including a fantastic 1 handed grab on 4th down for 21 yards. While we’re still without quite a few guys, this group being back certainly gave us the spark we needed.
2-Sometimes you need a game like this to reset yourself. The Vikings haven’t played our best the 2 weeks prior to last Friday night, and we all know JL Mann has struggled this season. We’ve seen what an in-season reset can do in High School Football many times in covering this sport, and I think the Vikings need that. Make no mistake, when your best player is back on the field, the confidence goes way up. It’s not a coincidence that Trey Burke was 14 of 25 for 222 yards and 3 TDs. When you’re healthier, players press less and Burke was very good in the win. 6 different players caught passes including 6 for Senior Zeke Bell Boyd. I thought overall our attitude was different this week and it looked like we were having a good time.
3-We of course have more football to be played but it certainly is most likely that we will play on the road the rest of the season. For the last 4 years I have watched the best Kicker I’ve EVER seen in High School Football play at Viking Stadium. He of course kicked ANOTHER 51 yard FG last Friday and once again we all just went “Yep…that’s Will Love.” There’s nothing ordinary about what he does, and it has been so much fun to even watch Will warm up at Viking Stadium over the last 4 years…let alone kick as many incredible FGs as he has. He’s a special talent and hopefully I’ll get to see him for 4 more weeks. But in all likelihood, that’s it for being at Viking Stadium. I will miss that visual very much.
