The first round of the playoffs was tough for our 2A/3A teams, as all but two teams remain alive to try to win a state title. Let’s take a look at the matchups from the 3A classification in our local listening area.
MVP @ Crescent
Crescent is coming off a win against Union, where they dominated from the start. They opened up a big lead and left no doubt they were going to cruise to the win. They were so balanced on offense, and Union just had no shot of stopping them. They passed for over 270 yards and also rushed for over 230 yards. Having 500 yards of offense is usually going to lead to some victories.
But the question is, can they do it again this week against a more superior opponent when they face an MVP squad, whom they lost to already this year?
MVP is coming off a surprising nail-biter against St. Joseph’s in which they would go on to win 28-27. But it did seem MVP was in a deep deal of trouble when St. Joes punched it in with little time left and were going for two. MVP, however, came up with the huge stop on the two-point conversion and advanced to the second round.
It wasn’t MVP’s best week last week. Were they looking ahead? Were they a little sluggish after a bye week? Who knows, but they must play better if they are going to advance. As mentioned, they did beat Crescent earlier this year, but it’s tough to beat a team twice. I feel overall, the MVP Stars are the better team, and they should go on to win this game.
Christ Church vs Woodruff
Christ Church opened the playoffs with a big win over Walhalla, 47-7. In the win, they passed for over 250 yards and rushed for over 170 yards. So they are feeling good for sure about how their week went last Friday night, and recently, as they have won three out of their last four games.
But it certainly gets tougher this week, and let’s face it Walhalla is not a great team this year, so they will have their hands full with this loaded Woodruff team.
Woodruff cruised to victory against West Oak 49-7. This was a game everyone knew they were going to roll and get their stars out of the game so they could be rested for the deeper rounds in these playoffs. Woodruff is a balanced attack, but it’s known their run game is lethal but the passing game led by Connor Davis was fantastic as he threw for 345 yards and four touchdowns.
Woodruff is the better team, but they can’t look past them. If they play their brand of football, they aren’t going to lose this game.
