Almost 30 years ago Bryan Robinson, was a Shrine Bowl offensive lineman, and a senior at Union High School, playing under Coach Mike Anthony in his first season as head coach in 1997. Robinson played the first three years of his high school career under the coaching legend Shell Dula, who led Union to state titles in 1990 and 1995 before departing for Greenwood. Both head coaches would go on to be hall of famers and would leave a lasting impression on the young Robinson, who still carries those lessons with him after all these years.
Robinson began his coaching career right out of college when he was hired as an assistant coach at Jonesville High School, by Coach David Lipsey in 2003. When Jonesville and Lockhart High School were closed in 2007 and consolidated with Union to create Union County High School, Robinson made the move with Lipsey to UCHS and served on the first coaching staff of the new high school. For the most part that is were he has been ever since. Serving in one role or another. Offensive Line Coach, Offensive Coordinator, middle school coach, whatever he was called on to do by whoever was the coach at that time.
Robinson was a finalist for the job two years ago when Quinnon Isom was named the Jackets head coach and Robinson made the decision to step away from coaching football. Robinson became an assistant basketball coach last year and this season was called on in a time of need and became the head coach of the Jonesville Middle School Football team.
Robinson is a Union County guy to the core. if I made a list of the people who understood and loved Union County Athletics there are not many people on that list that would rise to the level of Bryan Robinson. On Tuesday he was announced as the new head football coach of the place he has devoted his career and his life to.
Robinson knows that the challenge before him will not be easy. The Jackets have won a total of 4 games over the last three years. Union is a different place. Some say that’s a good thing while others simply don’t understand. Bryan Robinson does understand because he has lived it. There are significant challenges ahead for him. He will have to build a staff, something that isn’t always easy here. He will have to recruit the hallways of his own school finding those kids who for whatever reason are not coming out like they use to. There is work to be done and a lot of it, but Robinson says he is ready for the challenge.
“We aren’t waiting until January to get started, the work starts now.”
