Clemson

Duke Falters Against UNC; Handed First ACC Loss

Sometimes big time matchups don’t live up to the hype and sometimes you get this past Saturday’s Duke vs North Carolina matchup. A highly ranked all-time great rivalry coming down to one shot in front of all those people in primetime is what the sport is all about, but it wasn’t the only tight game this past week! This week we’ve got a potential battle for first place along with clashes between NCAA Tournament squads both in and out of conference! Once again now that we are in February we are going to incorporate BracketMatrix.com which is a website that compiles all the bracketology across the college basketball-sphere so for example Duke is in 110/110 brackets (as of February 6th) with an average seed of 1.00. The matrix is my go to hub for figuring out where teams stand on the bubble and different seedlines and is tremendously accurate year after year. Let’s dive in.

1. Duke Blue Devils 21-2 (10-1)

Last week: Won 67-49 vs Boston College, Lost 71-68 @ UNC

Duke suffocated Boston College with ease in preparation for a massive showdown with arch-rival North Carolina that could not have gotten off to a better start for the Blue Devils. Duke led 18-5 a little over six minutes into the game. UNC answered with an 11-1 run but Duke got back out in front by 12 after an opening half that saw the Blue Devils shoot over 50% from the field, double up the Tar Heels on the glass, and hold them to 3-12 from 3. But in the second half the script was completely flipped with UNC shooting over 60% while Duke’s offense fell off the face of the earth shooting just 3-11 from 3 and 12-32 overall with Cameron Boozer making up 7 of those made shots himself, despite all of that Duke still led by 6 with under two-and-a-half minutes to go before three 3s by three different UNC players capped off by the Seth Trimble shot with less than a second remaining put Duke away and handed the Blue Devils their first loss of the ACC season. It was a phenomenal game and will undoubtedly add some fuel to the fire to the matchup in Cameron to end the season but Duke has a different big game at that hallowed ground this week. After a midweek visit to Pitt to take on what might be Jeff Capel’s last Panther squad the Blue Devils will head home for a showdown against a Clemson team that is now tied with them for first place in the ACC with the winner taking sole possession. Duke should absolutely roll over Pitt but the game vs Clemson is a fascinating one. Clemson is a by committee team without great guard play which should play well into Duke’s hands when the Tigers have the ball as the talent and scheme of Duke’s defense will be very hard to beat unless Clemson gets a hot shooting game from Jestin Porter or Dillon Hunter. But where this game could get tricky for Duke is if the Blue Devils struggle against Clemson’s defense which is amongst the best in the nation and are very capable of making life miserable for Duke. The Blue Devils tendency for slow starts in games is well documented and Clemson has gotten out to some very hot starts in their big games (and blown a few of them too). While the Blue Devils still have to take care of business on Tuesday this Saturday’s game should be a great bout.

Upcoming schedule: February 10th @ Pittsburgh 9pm ESPN, February 14th vs Clemson 12pm ESPN

Tournament outlook: #3 NET, Battle for first place on Saturday

Bracket Matrix: 110/110 , Average seed: 1.00

2. Clemson Tigers 20-4 (10-1)

Last week: Won 66-64 @ Stanford, Won 77-55 @ Cal

Clemson is sitting mighty pretty after this past week of action with a 2-0 sweep of the ACC West Coast road trip while Duke’s first ACC loss means the Tigers control their destiny in the pursuit of an ACC regular season title. Against Stanford Clemson actually found themselves in a dogfight trailing by as many as six with around 14 minutes to go in the game but the Tigers went on a nice run to take the lead led by their three leading scorers in the game all being bench players! Clemson has the lowest PPG by a leading scorer amongst all of D1 men’s basketball and yet it has hardly mattered as the Tigers just keep on chugging. Ebuka Okorie of Stanford actually had a quality game but outside of him and Aidan Cammann the Cardinal offense was put in a box by the stout Clemson D. Then in Berkeley Clemson turned an early 13-9 deficit into a 32-14 lead with a titanic 23-1 run that all but put the Golden Bears away. Clemson’s lead would grow to as many as 24 points before settling into a nice 22 point margin of victory. These two wins brought Clemson to 14 straight road ACC victories which is tied for second all-time. Now this week the Tigers will return home to face a Virginia Tech team that is absolutely desperate for a marquee win to bolster their tournament hopes before that fateful matchup in Cameron. Virginia Tech right now is struggling heavily on offense and its a unit that would be hard pressed to remedy those issues with Neoklis Avdalas playing right into Clemson’s hands. VT’s defense is allowing opponents to shoot over 53% from 2 on the season while Clemson is one of the best paint teams in America on offense which is where this game will really hinge. On Saturday Clemson will have its hands full against the front court prowess of Cameron Boozer and the Duke Blue Devils but the Tigers have to be looking at the 2nd half of defense played by UNC and are thinking to themselves they can repeat that. One big thing that lends itself well to Clemson in this game is the Tigers propensity to get off to hot starts and big leads, although their second half struggles in keeping those leads against the likes of BYU are noted. A win against Duke would mean so much for the race for the ACC regular season crown but for Clemson this win would also do a lot to get the Tigers a résumé defining win that could bump them off the 5/6 seed line. This should be a good one.

Upcoming schedule: February 11th vs VT 7pm ACCN, February 14th @ Duke 12pm ESPN

Tournament outlook: #30 NET, Pretty big week huh?

Bracket Matrix: 110/110, Average seed: 6.55

3. Virginia Cavaliers 20-3 (9-2)

Last week: Won 67-47 vs Pitt, Won 72-59 vs Syracuse

Virginia had a very workmanlike week on the hardwood going 2-0 against teams they should beat and doing so without much drama with the Cavaliers out to their best start to a season since the 2019 national championship winning squad. UVA has gone from a team that was 340th in Offensive Rebound percentage a season ago to ranking 3rd in the entire nation. And it isn’t a case of a team missing a ton of shots and grabbing their own misses to then miss again as Virginia ranks well above average in EFG%, 2PT%, 3PT%. This is a very well balanced offensive attack for Ryan Odom and they’ll take those talents out of conference play on Saturday for a Quad 1 opportunity at a neutral site against an Ohio State team that is fighting for their bubble lives. But before that on Tuesday the Cavaliers have a road tilt with a Florida State team who have won four of their last five. Despite this hot streak UVA matches up extremely well with FSU as the Seminoles sport one of the worst defenses amongst High Major conference teams and an offense that struggles mightily from beyond the arc. Robert McCray and Chauncey Wiggins do provide an interesting matchup for UVA to where this game could be weird for a little bit but I think the Cavs have this one. Against Ohio State this is a very desperate Buckeye team with a top 25 offense in CBB and the length to make Thijs De Ridder uncomfortable, but the defensive issues for OSU are well documented and something UVA is keen to exploit.

Upcoming schedule: February 10th @ Florida State 7pm ESPNU, February 14th vs Ohio St. (Nashville, TN) 8pm FOX

Tournament outlook: #16 NET, Nice opportunity this week

Bracket Matrix: 110/110, Average seed: 4.16

4. North Carolina State Wolfpack 18-6 (9-2)

Last week: Won 84-83 @ SMU, Won 82-73 vs VT

Another week, another pair of wins for Will Wade’s Wolfpack and one that featured a double-digit comeback win on the road against a quality SMU team. Quadir Copeland put up 7 points, 10 rebounds, and 16 assists with no turnovers for one of the best pure point guard performances I have ever seen while ACC preseason POY Darrion Williams knocked down six 3s en route to 25 points which helped State hold off a late SMU rally before their game-winning attempt missed off the rim and the follow up attempt was blocked by Tre Holloman. The win against Virginia Tech was much more ho-hum as NCSU never trailed after the first few minutes and led by as many as fourteen with the score never getting closer than six in the second half. Copeland followed up his performance vs SMU with 21 points and 10 assists while Paul McNeil matched him with 21 points of his own. Now on Monday a big test looms in the form of the Louisville Cardinals. Right now despite their conference play resurgence the Wolfpack sit on the 8/9 seed lines due to their lack of big time wins and a win on the road against Louisville would do a lot to put those concerns to rest. Copeland vs Brown Jr. will be one of the best PG duels in the ACC this year and it should be a raucous crowd. Louisville’s offensive pace and love for the 3 ball vs N.C. State’s defense is going to be the big key here. Then on Saturday the Wolfpack return to Lenovo Center to take on a bit of a slipping Miami team but one with plenty of talent including Malik Reneau who will demand Ven-Allen Lubin’s full attention. Two big games that could instantly change N.C. State’s postseason position, should be fun!

Upcoming schedule: February 9th @ Louisville 7pm ESPN, February 14th vs Miami 4pm ESPN

Tournament outlook: #27 NET, Massive opportunity on Monday

Bracket Matrix: 110/110, Average seed: 8.07

5. North Carolina Tar Heels 19-4 (7-3)

Last week: Won 87-77 vs Syracuse, Won 71-68 vs Duke

To take an excerpt from last week’s post: “In a Duke-UNC game so ripe with frontcourt talent could it be a member of the backcourt that makes the difference and etches their name in the lore of this series? If so you’d be hard pressed to bet against Seth Trimble”

Trimble scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half including the game-winning 3 (his only 3 point attempt of the game) in the corner as the entire Dean Dome descended into abject chaos with 0.4 remaining. How can you not be romantic about college basketball? That isn’t to say Trimble was the sole reason for the Tar Heel victory as Caleb Wilson led all scorers with 23 and Henri Veesaar led the 2nd half with 13 but what a great moment for the senior guard. Oh and UNC also played a game before this I suppose where they took a 32-point lead on Syracuse that got whittled down to single digits in the waning moments of the game. But you’ll forgive me if I would like to spend the majority of the time we have here talking about the Duke game. UNC held Duke scoreless for nearly the final three minutes of the game, got Ngongba out of the game in just 16 minutes and shut down pretty much every Blue Devil not named Boozer. This week UNC will hit the road to Coral Gables for another Quad 1 opportunity against Miami, a team who will bring size and strength against UNC’s front court. This honestly has all the makings of a letdown performance from UNC not in the sense that Miami is bad but coming off of a win of such a highly emotional caliber a poor performance on the road is not out of the question. Thankfully for UNC if that happens they then get to play Pitt.

Upcoming schedule: February 10th @ Miami 7pm ESPN, February 14th vs Pitt 2pm ESPN

Tournament outlook: #24 NET, Keep stacking wins

Bracket Matrix: 110/110, Average seed: 5.41

6. Miami Hurricanes 18-5 (7-3)

Last week: Won 74-68 @ Boston College

Miami got to sit and stew on that Cal loss for an entire week and followed it up with an ehh performance where they trailed with 5:31 to go in the game before stiff arming the Eagles for an uncomfortable win. Miami has seen their tournament case slip ever so slightly as they’ve joined the ranks of the bubble following the Clemson, FSU, and Cal losses without a big-time win to lean on. Chances for that come this week in a pair of matchups with two-thirds of the research triangle. First up is UNC fresh off the Duke win and as previously mentioned I think there’s a real chance for Miami to jump here and get the Tar Heels as they have the size down low but also the skill at guard to make it happen. Miami has struggled heavily from 3 in ACC play (#16 out of 18 in 3PT%) but the cure to breaking out of that slump could lie in the UNC perimeter defense. If it isn’t that it would have to be Miami’s penchant for getting to the line being the key to their victory, so long as they make them which as we know is far from a guarantee. Then on Saturday Miami goes to Raleigh for a first year coach duel between Jai Lucas and Will Wade. Malik Reneau vs Ven-Allen Lubin is a real ball knower checkpoint this Saturday in what has the feeling of a huge make or break game for the Hurricanes if they can’t get it done on Tuesday. An 0-2 week? And Miami is starting to become the subject of some very uncomfortable conversations.

Upcoming schedule: February 10th vs UNC 7pm ESPN, February 14th @ N.C. State 4pm ESPN

Tournament outlook: #37 NET, Biggest week of your season what do you have for us Miami

Bracket Matrix: 94/110, Average seed: 10.67

7. Louisville Cardinals 17-6 (7-4)

Last week: Won 76-65 vs Notre Dame, Won 88-80 @ Wake Forest

There would be no overtime in this rendition of the ND-Louisville series as a 16-1 run from about the 9-minute mark of the second half to the U4 timeout put the game well in hand for the Cardinals. Louisville crushed the boards and shot 21-34 from 2 to overcome a tough 3 point shooting night and a hot start by the Irish. In Winston-Salem on Saturday the Cardinals had a pretty opposite performance with a dominant start culminating in a 15 point lead in the second half before Wake Forest clawed all the way back to make it an 81-80 game with Louisville still in front. Then the Demon Deacons didn’t score again for the final nearly five minutes of the game and Louisville survived. It was a very efficient day of offense for Louisville and it was just enough to outpace the frenzied comeback spurred by Juke Harris. Six Cardinals scored in double figures! Now Louisville has a similar problem as N.C. State where a lack of big-time wins is holding them back from being higher amongst the seed lists at the moment but this week gives Louisville a chance to add two quality wins to their case starting at home with N.C. State. Quadir Copeland vs Mikel Brown Jr., Will Wade vs Pat Kelsey, Transfer portal vs Transfer portal. This is an incredibly modern CBB type of game with two of the hottest young coaches in the business in a whiteout at the KFC Yum! Center and it has primetime Big Monday billing on ESPN. On the first day after the end of football season you’d be doing yourself a disservice by not tuning into this one. Then on Saturday in a quasi-road game against Baylor Louisville will join UVA as ACC teams stepping out of league play for a moment in an effort to boost their résumé. While this game has lust a bit of luster since it was scheduled as Baylor is off to their worst Big 12 start in recent memory it is still a Quad 1 opportunity against a team that just took Iowa State to the wire. Baylor’s offense is quite good and far from the issue this season as that honor lies with their defense that surrenders 3 pointers like they’re Valentine’s candy and against a Louisville team that loves to take the 3 that is a recipe for disaster.

Upcoming schedule: February 9th vs N.C. State 7pm ESPN, February 14th vs Baylor (Fort Worth, TX) 4pm ESPN

Tournament outlook: #17 NET, 2 games 2 Quad 1 opportunities

Bracket Matrix: 110/110, Average seed: 6.20

8. SMU Mustangs 16-7 (5-5)

Last week: Lost 84-83 vs N.C. State, Won 88-67 @ Pitt

SMU suffered a particularly heartbreaking loss at home this past week as Boopie Miller’s game-winning attempt didn’t find the bottom of the net and the Mustangs dropped to 3-6 against Quad 1 opponents and now find themselves trending towards the bubble. There’s really only one more regular season opportunity to move the needle with a future home date vs Louisville but the schedule softens up so much from here on out that it would require something truly awful for SMU to miss the tournament. This week SMU plays against the Big East deserters as they host Notre Dame on Tuesday before traveling to Syracuse on Saturday. SMU’s defense might give the Irish some room to make this interesting as ND is wanton to do for about 30-ish minutes but without Markus Burton there isn’t anyone on that team who can go bucket for bucket with Boopie Miller in the clutch. Syracuse is truly floundering right now and although a road game there is always tough I don’t see much Syracuse does well that SMU isn’t equipped to deal with. This in theory should be the start of a nice winning streak for the Mustangs.

Upcoming schedule: February 10th vs Notre Dame 7pm ACCN, February 14th @ Syracuse 2pm The CW

Tournament outlook: #34 NET, Schedule lightens up here; have to take advantage

Bracket Matrix: 110/110, Average seed: 8.79

9. California Golden Bears 17-7 (5-6)

Last week: Won 90-85 vs Georgia Tech, Lost 77-55 vs Clemson

Cal followed up the Miami win by trailing into the second half vs Georgia Tech and then being obliterated off the face of the earth by Clemson for a profoundly meh 1-1 week. Nothing too particularly damaging to their tournament hopes but a win against Clemson certainly would have made life easier. Now a home game vs SMU is the only real chance for an impressive win in the regular season and it doesn’t seem like stacking wins against the bottom of the ACC will be enough unless they really blow some teams out. In good news the UNC win is aging very nicely and if Florida State continues their run that loss could be a lot more forgivable. This week the Golden Bears travel out east to take on Syracuse and BC in some must win games and starting with Syracuse this might be the game with the single worst combined shot selection in the entire season of college basketball. Just two teams that love nothing more than jacking up 25+ foot 3s and/or contested mid-range fadeaway jumpshots. It’ll be interesting to see how Cal does on the road but these are the games you have to have. Against BC a loss here would practically be a season ender so just don’t do that.

Upcoming schedule: February 11th @ Syracuse pm 7pm ESPNU, February 14th @ BC 12pm ACCN

Tournament outlook: #60 NET, Really need to take care of business this week

Bracket Matrix: 67/110, Average seed: 10.90

10. Virginia Tech Hokies 16-8 (5-6)

Last week: Lost 82-73 @ N.C. State

The ACC’s bubbliest bubble team continued to bubble with another chance for a big win passing by as a loss to N.C. State where the Hokies never truly threatened. The offense has turned rotten as they rank near the bottom of nearly every stat in the ACC since conference play began and the defense just hasn’t been able to keep games low scoring enough to compensate for that. Ben Hammond shot 0-9 from the field in the loss to State as Avdalas and Lawal managed to have a good game but everyone else was varying degrees of horrifyingly bad. The Virginia win is still great for the Hokies but they are running out of chances to pick up another big win but they’ll have a shot this week as they travel to face Clemson. Unfortunately for VT this is just about one of the worst matchups for them as Clemson’s defense thrives on teams like VT even when the Hokies aren’t having the issues they are. Avdalas and Hansberry play right into Clemson’s hands but a potential shining grace for VT is their ability to get to the line and knock down FTs. Then after that a home date with FSU that, frankly, VT cannot afford to screw up.

Upcoming schedule: February 11th @ Clemson 7pm ACCN, February 14th vs Florida St. 2pm ACCN

Tournament outlook: #55 NET, VT this is the sixth week in a row you’ve brought the UVA win to show and tell

Bracket Matrix: 41/110, Average seed: 10.93

11. Florida State Seminoles 11-12 (4-6)

Last week: Won 82-79 @ Notre Dame

Florida State started off red hot in South Bend leading 27-9 in the first half before Notre Dame stormed back to make this a very wild back and forth game in the second half. Ultimately Notre Dame’s foul trouble and FT woes combined with FSU getting near perfect late game FTs from bad shooters after making 15 3s as the worst 3 point shooting team in the ACC was enough to win their fourth game in five tries. Honestly this is a very encouraging sign from Luke Loucks in year one as even four of their six losses in ACC play have come by single digits. Chauncey Wiggins and Robert McCray IV have been a fun duo to watch and they get a chance to throw some more wrenches in people’s seasons going forward. Nothing they could do could compromise Virginia but the Saturday game in Blacksburg could provide a very bouncy bubble to be popped.

Upcoming schedule: February 10th vs UVA 7pm ESPNU, February 14th @ VT 2pm ACCN

Tournament outlook: #95 NET, Nice run but no

Bracket Matrix: 0/110

12. Stanford Cardinal 15-9 (4-7)

Last week: Lost 66-64 vs Clemson, Won 95-72 vs Georgia Tech

After losing a tough back and forth game with Clemson, Stanford finally snapped their losing streak with a dominant win over Georgia Tech for their first win in nearly a month. Okorie had an efficient 18 in the loss to Clemson but exploded for 40(!) in the win over GT as Stanford themselves averaged 1.31 points per possession. The tournament hopes are pretty much all but dead now but a strong end to the season could mean a lot for this program and their hopes to retain Okorie’s services. This week Stanford goes on the road for a magical mystery tour of bad ACC teams with a matchup with BC giving us a bucket getter special of Donald Hand Jr. vs Ebuka Okorie before an even better version of that on Saturday with Okorie vs Juke Harris of Wake.

Upcoming schedule: February 11th @ Boston College 9pm ESPNU, February 14th @ Wake Forest 4pm ACCN

13. Syracuse Orange 13-11 (4-7)

Last week: Lost 87-77 @ UNC, Lost 72-59 @ UVA

Syracuse had spurts of playing UNC and UVA tough but neither were anything more than just that. A good half there a wow performance here is just about what you can expect from the Adrian Autry experience at this point. Right now the biggest news story around the team is the fact that their worst player got benched which is only a story because it happens to be Kiyan Anthony, son of Carmelo. At least at this point Syracuse has a chance for JJ Starling to make like six 3s and ruin Cal’s season or put SMU’s in jeopardy with a Donnie Freeman 30 bomb. Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Upcoming schedule: February 11th vs Cal 7pm ESPNU, February 14th vs SMU 2pm The CW

14. Wake Forest Demon Deacons 11-12 (2-8)

Last week: Lost 88-80 vs Louisville

As Wake Forest’s losing streak extended to five games I really just am kind of sad it didn’t work out. Steve Forbes was a great hire and they had some really talented teams that had good moments but just could never avoid the big bad loss that kept them out of the field. And now we stand on the verge of the end of the Forbes era and I wonder who could even attempt to fix this program? One that before Forbes arrived had not had a 20 win campaign since Al-Farouq Aminu donned the Demon Deacons uniform 10+ years before. Juke Harris is just about the only reason to ever even think about tuning into these guys right now but you should probably wait for the Stanford game to do that. Juke Harris vs Ebuka Okorie will be cinema.

Upcoming schedule: February 11th @ Georgia Tech 9pm ACCN, February 14th vs Stanford 4pm ACCN

Tournament outlook: #67 NET, Ok but seriously how are these guys still a Q1 win lol

15. Boston College Eagles 9-14 (2-8)

Last week: Lost 67-49 @ Duke, Lost 74-68 vs Miami

Well I mean who could have imagined Drake Maye looking that bad huh? Being serious Boston College’s week went just about as you could have expected but now they get the chance to play spoiler vs the west coast teams as Stanford and Cal travel to Chestnut Hill or THE HEIGHTS or whatever we’re calling it these days with seasons hanging in the balance.

16. Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets 11-13 (2-9)

Last week: Lost 90-85 @ Cal, Lost 95-72 @ Stanford

What kind of leash does Damon Stoudamire have at Georgia Tech? The Yellow Jackets somehow feel like they’re getting worse as they get more talented and they can’t even pull off their random upset of a highly ranked team or bubble popping destructive win anymore. The games against Cal and Stanford were just proof of how stale this has all gotten in just less than three seasons. Okorie lit the Jackets up for 40 points while against Cal GT blew a second half lead that you just had no faith in them ever holding onto. This week the Yellow Jackets take on Wake Forest in a putrid game before an even worse one in South Bend.

Upcoming schedule: February 11th vs Wake Forest 9pm ACCN, February 14th @ Notre Dame 12pm The CW

17. Notre Dame Fighting Irish 11-13 (2-9)

Last week: Lost 76-65 @ Louisville, Lost 82-79 vs Florida St.

Well Notre Dame did just about what Notre Dame has been doing in the entire calendar year of 2026. Against Louisville the Irish started out hot and were defending very well, holding themselves in the game against Louisville for well over 30 minutes. And then Louisville went on a 16-1 run to slam the door to knock Notre Dame to 4-45 against AP Top 25 opponents since defeating #6 Wichita State to win Maui in November of 2017. Then against FSU, Notre Dame started off incredibly cold, missing countless open looks while FSU, one of the ACC’s worst shooting teams, was blistering from 3 no matter how contested the look. Notre Dame fought back and got into the game after trailing by as many as 18 while even taking the lead in the waning moments but Carson Towt going 0-7 from the FT line, Jalen Haralson fouling out, FSU’s 50% FT shooter making both FTs to be down 3 before ND got two wide open looks for their best 3 point shooters that both careened helplessly off the rim. This week ND takes their dubious talents on the road to face SMU looking for their first road win of 2026 before returning home to try and beat Georgia Tech in a game that will probably go to at least two overtimes. A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.

18. Pittsburgh Panthers 9-15 (2-9)

Last week: Lost 67-47 @ UVA, Lost 86-67 vs SMU

Well hey Pitt you know you got blown out twice this week vs good teams but hey you know it could be worse you could be facing two of the top NBA draft prospects including one of them being very mad about losing to the other. You have to wonder if Jon Scheyer and Duke will show mercy to a program legend like Jeff Capel and try not to make it look too bad.
