falling just short of a 9th inning comeback despite going 2-11 with runners in scoring position in the opener Tuesday morning, the Burgers looked to brush it off quickly and get back on track offensively in game 2.
After Enrique Segura (0-0, 4.76 ERA) faced the minimum in the top of the first in spite of a leadoff single to left fielder Ely Brown, Arturo Disla added to his historic 5 for 5, two homer day at the plate yesterday with a mammoth 414 foot shot that nearly went out of the left field gates. That blast, which followed a 2 out pitch that glanced off of Gleider Figuereo’s foot, flipped the script from game one in which the Dash took a 2-0 first inning lead on back to back solo shots with 2 away.
Segura allowed a 2 out base runner in each of the next two frames before the Burgers doubled their lead in the bottom of the third. With 1 out, Paxton Kling singled and Maxton Martin followed by lining a 3-1 pitch inside the foul pole in right for a 2 run shot. Hub City threatened with 2 out in the inning when Arturo Disla drew a walk and Malcolm Moore sent the first pitch he saw on a line into center for a single. But, Yeison Morrobel ended the inning with a fly ball to center.
Third Baseman Caleb Bonemer cracked the goose egg for the Dash by leading off the ensuing half inning with a solo shot to the berm in left. That was the first of three straight runners to reach. Designated Hitter Colby Shelton followed with a base hit. After a wild pitch and throwing error on Malcolm Moore, first baseman Anthony Depino drew a walk followed by a George Wolkow sac fly to cut the Burgers’ lead in half and end the night for Segura, who gave way to Luke Savage.
That is where the game went off the rails. Savage retired his first batter on a grounder to third. But the next six would go on to reach as the Dash ended up hanging a 7-spot in the inning — 5 runs coming via 3 singles that combined for three RBIs, and a 2 run homer from catcher Boston Smith that went over the top of the scoreboard in right center. A strikeout stopped the bleeding, but Hub City would now have to work out of a 3-run hole.
That hole got deeper as Winston-Salem did what good offensive teams do and took advantage of a two out walk. After Boston Smith singled with 1 out, Shelton worked back from an 0-2 count for a walk. Depino made it hurt with an RBI double. Porter notched his 6th strikeout to leave 2 in scoring position, but the Burgers were doubled up, now down 8-4.
Cole Stasio and Jesus Gamez combined to keep Winston-Salem off the board over the last 2 and two-thirds, scattering 2 walks and two hits while striking out 4 along the way. But the Hub City offense went on to leave each of their last 6 batters to reach on base, going 0 for their last 8 with runners in scoring position as the Dash went on to complete the comeback and take a 2-0 lead in the series.
Game three will feature J’Briell Easley (0-0, 3.60 ERA) going against a yet to be named starter for the Dash. First pitch is set for 6:35 PM.
