After some much-needed rain washed out Saturday’s game 5, the homestand/series would have to close with a double header featuring two 7-inning games on Sunday afternoon.
In game one, Isamel Agreda (0-1, 7.36 ERA) would go against the rehabbing David Sandlin, making his second start of the week.
After both teams were kept off the scoreboard in spite of a threat where Hub City left 2 in scoring position, Winston-Salem broke through with a 1 out solo homer off the scoreboard in right center in the top of the 2nd.
Agreda settled in afterwards, retiring each of the next 6 batters he faced with 4 strikeouts before issuing his first walk of the day to Colby Shelton with 1 out in the top of the 4th. But, he rung up Anthony Depino Ang got out of the inning when Shelton was caught stealing to retire the side.
The Burgers offense had no trouble getting runners aboard. After the first inning, they left a 2 out walk to Chandler Pollard on. The next inning, Maxton Martin led off with a double to the right center gap. Malcolm Moore drew a 1 out walk, but both were left stranded with back to back strikeouts from Kling and Figuereo.
Winston-Salem would make Hub City’s inability to find clutch hits hurt with another solo homer from Boston Smith — this one over the visitor bullpen in right. After Hub City stranded a 1 out walk to Arturo Disla in the home half of the frame, Agreda was relieved by Luke Savage to start the 6th. Unfortunately for Savage, his 2nd outing of the week was almost just as much of an avalanche of runs.
After striking out Ely Brown to start the frame, the next three all reached safely on a walk, a single, and a fielding error on Chandler Pollard. George Wolkow followed that with an RBI knock and Boston Smith kept the line moving with an RBI fielders choice on which Wolkow was forced and Depino scored.
The Dash would plate 2 more in the frame on a double from Ryan Burrowes that would be followed by a walk to Kaleb Freeman. But, Savage managed to get out of the inning with a strikeout of TJ McCants, having given up a 4 spot on 3 hits, 2 walks, and an error, giving Winston-Salem a 6-0 lead heading to the bottom of the inning.
Hub City was gifted 2 base runners on consecutive errors to start the frame and loaded them with 1 out on a single from Chandler Pollard. But, they left them that way as Luke Hanson struck out and Maxton Martin grounded to short.
Seth Clark worked around back to back walks in the top of the 7th, but in the end, the Burgers left 11 on base — 6 in scoring position in a 6-0 shutout.
Game Two
After getting blanked in the first game of the twin bill, the Spartanburgers turned to DJ McCarty (0-0, 7.71 ERA) to try and slow down the Winston-Salem offense. But he did not have the command he normally does, walking each of the first two batters of the game to start a Dash rally.
After 2 strikeouts, McCarty’s ERA ballooned to over 11 as George Wolkow was beaned to lad the bases, Ryan Burrowes followed with a 2 run single, and Grant Magill drove in 2 more with a knock. Eblin was struck out by Mailon Felix to retire the side, but it was 4-0 before the Burgers bats ever got to the plate.
In the home half of the frame, Hub City broke through for their first run of the day with a little help. Maxton Martin walked to lead off the inning and took 2nd on an errant pickoff throw. He later stole 3rd, setting up a sac fly from Arturo Disla to cut the lead to 4-1.
That would be as close as the game ever got. The Dash hung a 3 spot in the third off Mailon Felix, four runs in the 5th off Cole Stasio, and 2 more off Catcher Cal Stark on a 2 run homer in the 6th as the Dash swept the double header and won the series with a 13-1 victory.
The Burgers will have Monday to get this day out of their minds before they head to Greenville for 6 games with the Drive starting Tuesday at 6:45 PM as 2 arms yet to be named battle it out to start round 2 of the 2026 I-85 Rivalry Series.
