After a tough loss in which Hub City left 12 runners on base and six in scoring position while the pitching gave up three multi-run homers, the Hub City Spartanburgers looked to rebound on Thursday night. They would not have an easy task, facing off against the Braves’ top prospect — right handed pitcher Cam Caminiti (1-2, 5.35 ERA), while J’Briell Easley (0-0, 5.17) would get the nod for Hub City.
The two would duel it out with Easley striking out seven and walking one in three no-hit shutout innings. Caminiti stranded a runner in each of the first two frames with a strikeout and a hit. His third inning was where Hub City finally broke through.
After getting 2 quick outs, Rafe Perich drew a walk. Malcolm Moore got back in the hit column after seeing his 10-game streak snapped last night with a single that was followed by a 2-run double to the right-center gap from Paxton Kling. A grounder to first got Caminiti out of the inning, but heading to the fourth, the Burgers led 2-0.
Brock Porter came on and kept the solid pitching effort going into the 8th while Caminiti settled in, pitching into the 7th inning before giving up a leadoff single to Quincy Scott, who was shortly thereafter erased on a fielder’s choice that Chandler Pollard reached on. After Luke Hanson battled his way to a walk, Caminiti was yanked for David Rodriguez, who gave up a single to Yeison Morrobel on the 2nd pitch, plating Pollard.
Rodriguez would get Rome out of the inning by inducing a 4-6-3 double play from Rafe Perich, sending the game to the stretch with Hub City leading 3-0. But after Porter issued a 1 out walk to Isaiah Drake, he was pulled for Jesus Gamez, who promptly walked John Gil. Eric Hartman followed with an RBI double before Gomez got Dixon Williams to whiff on a check swing. Cody Miller drew a walk to load the bases before Will Verdung drove in two with a base knock to tie the game at three apiece.
Gamez was taken down for Joey Danielson, who got the Burgers out of the inning with a strikeout of Colby Jones, preserving the 3-3 deadlock, which held until the bottom of the ninth, where Luke Hanson added to his recent list of successes.
After a one out single from Quincy Scott and a stolen base, with 2 away, Hanson lined a single through the 6 hole into left field. Scott streaked his way around third and beat the throw to the plate by a hair for the walk off 4-3 victory, giving Danielson the win in relief (1.1 IP, K, BB, 0H, 0R).
With the 2-1 lead in the series, the Burgers (23-18) will look to secure at least a split on Friday night as Joe Adametz (2-3, 6.29 ERA) faces a Rome arm yet to be named.
