Each Week following Spartanburg Viking Football games, I’m going to take a couple of days and think about the 3 most important things I saw on the field. Some good, some great, some not so good. I’ll try to break through what mattered, and what not to overreact to. So here’s 3 things from Week 1’s 24-20 loss to Gaffney.
1-We have to start with the obvious. I say time and time again, Senior RB delivers more than a Duke/UNC basketball game. This young man is the best RB I’ve seen in my 17 years at Spartanburg. That’s no knock on so many greats…Lynch is just different. 290 yards against Gaffney…a new career High…Lynch was a machine that even a great Defense like Gaffney’s couldn’t slow down. Lynch is 744 yards away from becoming the school’s all time rushing leader.
2-21 Penalties for 167 yards…in 1 game. That just can’t happen. I know it’s Week 1 and kids are gonna make mistakes…Absolutely. But that’s simply just too much to overcome. It was all kinds too: False starts, offsides, holdings, personal fouls, late hits. Discipline is something Coach Mark Hodge preached last week and we fell short. We have to cut that down by over 50% per game going forward, and IF we do, I really like this team going forward.
3-I was very proud of our Defensive effort. Gaffney is a very good team who made HUGE plays when it mattered in the 4th quarter and deserved the Victory. But our Defense made a ton of great plays as well and some big sacks in the 2nd half. It was great to see Senior LB Isiah Lipscomb back out there and boy did that kid make some great tackles. Shout out to DT Cameron Quarles who made some big plays in his first career Varsity start. There’s plenty to work on and with our schedule, there’s no time to waste.
Quick note – Shout out to Senior WR Tre’Gan Mickler. 10 catches for 77 yards.
