Each Week following Spartanburg Viking Football games, I’m going to take a couple of days and think about the 3 most important things I saw on the field. Some good, some great, some not so good. I’ll try to break through what mattered, and what not to overreact to. So here’s 3 things from Week 2’s 21-14 over Greenwood.
1-I’ve spent a lot of time this offseason and last week talking about Trenton Lynch. But how about our Viking Offense this week!!!! When Lynch went down with cramps, look at how many other Vikings stepped up down the stretch. Let’s start with Freshman RB Mayson Whiteside’s first career TD run from 12 yards out to give us the lead in the 2nd half. Or what about Soph WR Grayson Bennett with his first 2 career catches, one on 3rd down on the last drive. Or how about Senior QB Aryan Desai’s first career start and delivering a strike with under 40 seconds left on 3rd down to Senior WR Tre’Gan Mickler for the lead. Wat about Sr WR B.J Dawkins with the grab on the 2 point conversion right after. The ultimate team victory on Offense for the Vikings, stepping up when needed.
2- What Senior LB Isiah Lipscomb is doing following a major knee injury is blowing my mind right now. 12 tackles last week and 15 more against Greenwood last Friday night. #27 is all over the field and has such a knack off getting off blocks and getting to the football. Huge shout out as well to Senior DE Tryon Duncan who had a career high 10 tackles in the win including a sack on the last play of the game. The Viking Defense tallied 5 TFL in the win. Also I was very impressed with Soph CB Jerrion Morris who had a couple of great coverage plays on the final Greenwood drive. Both throws that came his way were incomplete because of great coverage.
3- We still need to clean up several things before our next few games against Dutch Fork and Byrnes. We’re still committing too many penalties and it’s back to back weeks of slow starts on Offense. If we can get those things cleaned up, I really feel this is as balanced of a team we’ve seen in a while, and we can make some real noise this year in 5A. Shout out to Parker McCroy for his solid punts this week.
