The high school football season is moving right along as we are nearing another Friday night and we got plenty of exciting matchups. As always lets take a closer look at the matchups from the 2A/3A games in our local listening area.
Broome @ Woodmont
It hasn’t been the start of the season that Broome would have hope for being 0-2 with loses coming to 2A schools the first week against Woodruff and then last week they fell to Chesnee 40-20. It was a close first quarter as both teams went back and forth and then Chesnee simply opened up the game and never looked back.
Woodmont is also coming into this game with an 0-2 record they fell in their season opener to Greer by a final score of 45-31. Then they fell to Southside Christian in overtime last week. They so far have given themselves a shot to win a game but they haven’t been able to make enough plays to pull one out.
I am leaning towards Woodmont to get into the win column but I think this will be a close game. Can Broome string together some stops perhaps a turnover that will help change the outcome.
MVP @ May River
MVP is coming off a bye week off after their opening loss to Ambassador Christ 21-14. MVP will look to have the extra week of practice to clean up some mistakes and prepare for this May River team and try to avoid an 0-2 start.
May River is also 0-1 as they loss to Wando last week by a final score of 33-20. May River struggled to take care of the football in their opener as their quarterback Luc Tran threw 4 interceptions and was only 5-16 passing for the game. Trying to get the passing game going against MVP defense will be a tough task.
I look for MVP to bounce back and get into the win column, I see them creating some turnovers of their own and getting their offense going.
Chester @ Union
Union fell to 0-2 last week when they hosted Greer last Thursday Night. They originally were set to play on Friday Night but we the threat of weather, which once again delayed several games they made the decision to play on Thursday. But it was a rough night for Union as they were over powered by a strong Greer team 52-0.
Chester is also 0-2 and their latest loss came at the hands of Fairfield Central 43-22. Chester was not able to generating much out of the passing game but did manage to run the football well and that will be a key this week for Union can they slow down the run and force Chester have to throw the ball.
I am leaning towards Chester getting the win, I think Union will be able to make some plays and give themselves a chance to win the game but until I see consistency on both sides of the ball it is hard to go with them.
Chapman @ Seneca
The Chapman Panthers have gotten off to a hot start with a 2-0 record as last week they simply just handed Walhalla a beat down. They won the game 61-6 and you can tell this one was going to be an ugly one right from the start. The Panthers jumped out to a 28-0 lead in the first quarter. The running clock you just knew was going to be the case in the second half and yet they still produced 60+ points.
Seneca opened their season with a loss a couple of weeks back losing to Powdersville 28-12 but they were able to bounce back and defeat Liberty 21-14 last Friday Night.
Chapman has been a fun story this year so far as last year they were just a one win football team and with the big points they have been putting up reminds many of how they were playing like this week in and week out just a few years ago. The question is can they keep it going? I look for them to keep it rolling and get the win this week.
Landrum @ Polk
The Landrum Cardinals dropped to 1-1 on the season after last week loss to 96. They started the game last Friday Night but a storm cell basically sat in the area and caused a long delay and they decided to push the rest of the game to Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals battled hard but fell short 28-26.
Polk County has had a rough start to the season as they are 0-2 and were dismantled in both of their first two games. They lost to Chase 45-24 in week 1 and then in week 2 they were beaten 56-12 against Newton-Conover. So that means so far this season they have been outscored 36-101,
I look for Landrum to bounce back and get the win this week and I look for the rushing attack to have a big day on the ground and help lead them to the win.
Emerald @ Woodruff
The Woodruff Wolverines are heading into this matchup 2-0 as they are coming off the 32-15 win against Fountain Inn last week. The game was tight for the first quarter and half and one point Fountain INN had a 13-12 lead. But the Wolverines took the lead back on a 48 yard field goal and then forced a turnover on a interceptions, which they converted into a touchdown to take a 22-12 lead at the half.
The only points given up in the second half was on a safety. Fountain Inn had the ball at their one yard line and then fumbled Woodruff recovered and on the next play they were tackled in the end zone. But really the Wolverines took away any opportunities the Wolverines had to score.
Emerald is coming into this matchup 2-0 as well they opened the season with a win against Crescent is a hard-fought battle winning 21-6. They were once again victorious against a solid Newberry team where they put up 70 points in a 70-34 win. The Vikings had a big night from their Junior Quarterback Beau Hite who completed 18/25 passes for 381 yards and three touchdowns.
Emerald will be a tough test for the Wolverines and this should be one of the more entertaining games on Friday Night. I like Woodruff at home to get the win in a close one.
Chesnee @ Columbia
The Chesnee Eagles as mentioned earlier are coming off a 40-20 win over Broome. The game started off with both teams offense having explosive plays and the lead went back and forth. But in the second quarter Chesnee defense started stringing some stops and opened their lead and never looked back. They shift their focus to Columbia this week trying to get to 2-0.
Columbia is entering the game at 1-1 with win the season opener Eau Claire 36-34 but they are coming off a loss last week against 33-8 against Lamar. So you know they are going to do whatever it takes to bounce back and get into the win.
I just don’t see the same fire power on this squad as Chesnee has I look for the Eagles to get the win on the road and improve to 2-0.
