Week 5 2A/3A Preview

Its already the halfway mark of the season after this week and we have yet have had a week that was not effected by lighting or heat, so maybe this week will end that streak and we can have a normal Friday night. Let’s take a look at the matchups from Friday Night in our local listening area.

Woodruff @ Chapman

The Woodruff Wolverines bounced back from their loss last week to the Emerald Vikings by making quick work of the Union Yellow Jackets 52-6. They were up right before he half by several scores and the game was interrupted by the lighting but after a lengthy delay it had no impact on the Wolverines as they cruised to the victory.

The Chapman Panthers had one of the more impressive victories last week over Clinton Red Devils. The Panthers have been a role but this was a game that many including myself had eyes on to see are they for real and they have answered that question by dismantling Clinton 45-13. I am not shocked the won the game but its how they did it was the most surprising right from kickoff they left no doubt out there on who was going to win the game and they will have another test this week against Woodruff.

This should be a fun matchup, which is usually a region matchup but with Woodruff moving down to 2A it will be a very exciting non-region game and I am leaning towards Woodruff winning a close one. This game will come down to what defense can get the key stops or turnover to help change the outcome.

Chesnee @ Blacksburg

The Chesnee Eagles are coming off their first loss of the season last week as they played a tight game against RS Central and fell 42-35. This game is exactly what I figured with the offensives, I knew both teams could put up some points but it was going to come down to who can string together enough stops and I felt like that was going to be Chesnee but it was RS Central that made enough plays to get the job done. Now the Eagles will look to bounce back on the road against Blacksburg.

Blacksburg is coming into this game with a 2-2 record with a win in their season Opener against Berea and then they went on a two game losing streak before snapping that last week against Thornwell 33-0. Blacksburg so far has beaten the teams they probably should beat but haven’t been able to get a big defining week quite yet.

I look for Chesnee to bounce back and take care of business against on the road this Friday Night, I just think they got to much fire power on offense for Blacksburg to handle.

Powdersville @ Broome

The Broome Centurions had to deal with the biggest weather issues last week as they traveled to Emerald and they couldn’t get the game started due to the thunder storms that hovered over the area all night. They moved the game until this past Monday and it was a rough one for the Centurions as they would fall 56-14.

Powdersville is coming into this matchup with a 2-2 record with their only loses coming to Daniel and TL Hanna so those are by no means bad loses. However last week Powdersville is coming off a dominating win against Pendleton 57-0. Powdersville jumped to a 28-0 nothing lead by the first quarter and never looked back as they made quick work of Pendleton.

Broome on now a short week having to face a good Powdersville is a tall task I just don’t this week will be the week they get back on track and I believe Powdersville will win it.

Ware Shoals @ Landrum

The Landrum Cardinals are coming off a bye week after their 32-20 win over Polk County a couple weeks back. They will look to get their third win of the season this Friday Night against Ware Shoals.

Ware Shoals is off to a slow start this sitting at 1-3 on the year their latest loss came this past Friday Night against Whitmire by a final score of 44-0. They struggled to stop the Whitmire rushing attack which led to several explosive plays and touchdowns. Landrum’s rushing attack will be another challenge for them to face.

I look for Landrum’s rushing attack to lead them in this matchup and produced several big plays for the Cardinals, I think it leads the way for them and they get their third win of the year.

Union @ Clinton

Union as mentioned earlier was defeated last Friday Night 52-6 to the Woodruff Wolverines and things wont get much easier for them this week to end up in the win column. I will say Union certainly doesn’t run from competition as they always seem to play one of the toughest non-region schedule you will find.

Clinton was also mentioned earlier as they were dominated by the Chapman Panthers and fell 45-13, the Red Devils will look to get the bad taste of their mouth and get back to their winning form.

There not much to really preview here right now, its really the same thing that comes with Union each week as they have been trying to rebuild the program and that is taking some time. I just don’t see Union having the horses keeping up with Clinton and I see the Red Devils cruising to a victory.

St Joes @ MVP

MVP was another game that was affected by the storms last week as they traveled to Gray Colligate and they started their contest later in the night. It was another struggle for MVP as the were defeated 49-15, and things won’t get any easier for the Stars this week as they are taking on a solid St. Joes team.

St. Joes is off to a 4-0 start and their latest win came against Berea, who they made quick work of and easily defeated 49-6. St. Joes is a team that is filled with Juniors and Seniors so they have tons of experience which allows them to operate efficiently. They are averaging 38 points per game offensively, while they are only giving up 15 points.

St. Joes experience and efficiency I think will be too much to handle for MVP and I see St. Joes getting their fifth win of the season this Friday Night.
